Over the years social media has become an important avenue to increase awareness and traffic to your site or brand. Twitter is one of the most popular. If, like most people, you don't have a lot of Twitter followers you hope that one day someone who does will tweet or re-tweet a link to your site.

If you don't want to wait to get noticed you can pay someone to tweet a link for you. On Fiverr.com there are many people willing to do this for as little as $5. But is it worth it?

I ran a little informal experiment, buying three tweets from three different types of tweeters to see what it's like. I also have experience with what it's like to get popular tweeters to tweet a link for comparison. Here's what I found.

I started out this site with a free template that I found online. I prefer to do my own web design so my site isn't exactly like other sites, but sometimes with blogs I like to start putting content up first, then work on the design later. Using a free template is cheap and easy.

Once there's some content on the site, and I've included the gadgets I'd like to use for the site, I like to create a new template from scratch. In this post I'll describe the process I use to create blog templates.

The process is similar for most types of websites, only the last section is specific to Blogger.com.

If you want to change the Google account you've used with your Blogger hosted blog to point to a new email address there's really only one proper way to do it. You need to export your blog, use a text editor to change the author in the exported blog, delete all your existing posts, then import the newly edited file.

You may want to do this if you've changed your email address after getting a custom domain name. Or if you've previously been using different email addresses for each blog and now want to consolidate all your posts under one account that is linked to your Google+ profile so you can get the SEO benefits of having a Google+ account and authorship.

There are some hacks that only change the author in the template but since blogs can be accessed in multiple ways, including RSS feeds, it's important to actually change the author of the post, and not just what is displayed in the browser. In this post I'll walk you through the steps of how to change the author of each blog post.
Dear Blogger Team,

I'd like to share some of my thoughts about some of the things you've been doing lately and my concerns over the general direction you're heading in.

You've created a great service and I appreciate the effort you've put into both making it freely available and making it better. You understand that there was a serious need to enhance Blogger reader's presentation and have done something really cool with Dynamic Views.

Dynamic Views are a great leap forward. My issue is, it might be too big of a leap and I don't think the current Internet ecosystem is ready for it.

You seem to have favored Dynamic Views rather than making minor yet significant enhancements to the current templating system which is in major need of updates.

Updating the current template system to provide more options to template designers first, and building Dynamic Views on top of it by allowing the new Dynamic Views components to reuse the old Blogger tags would have been a better course IMO.

Below I've tried to explain why I disagree with the current direction and give suggestions on how to improve the current Layout system.
DomainTools.com is a website which provides technical information about other websites such as their domain name registration, directory listings, keywords, SEO score, etc. It is a very useful site if you're looking for information like that but are so many people online looking for that information it would rank as the 208th most popular site on the internet?

DomainTools isn't as popular as it's Alexa rank would imply but it does get a lot of visits and they manage to get many of their visits by scraping only the most important SEO related content from the over 100 million registered domain names without giving anything back to the sites they're scraping from. At one point they even had a close relationship with Google.

Let's look at what's really going on.
Ouch, that laser has a bit of a sting. After learning about Salty Droid through the Scamworld video and article, I visited his site and spent hours reading about what he's been doing I was really impressed.

I really related to what he was doing and I started this site because I was sick of seeing some of the same things I think he was seeing. I'm not trying to put myself on the same level as someone that has tried to help the families of victims of people like James Arthur Ray, or trying to slap some sense into someone on an obvious path to self-destruction.

I thought I had found a kindred spirit so I was really shocked at the reception I got when I left comments on his site. It took me by surprise that people were accusing me of being one of the scammers when I created this site to help people find ways to make money online without being scammed and without giving me money. I was to eager to express my interest and wound up doing something stupid.
That way your blog's url will look more like money howtoNOTmakemoneyonline.com instead of someblog.blogspot.com.

From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in terms of traffic when you have your own domain name or you don't. It seems like more of a vanity issue. I've listed the top 30 Blogger blogs hosted using a blogspot.com subdomain below.

If you're blog starts becoming popular and you want to spend a little on it you can get cheap domain names for under $7 a year with free WhoisGuard privacy protection for the first year at NameCheap (affiliate link). I've been using NameCheap exclusively for the past few years and have been very happy with their service and prices.
Blogging is a cheap and easy way for people who don't know how to build their own website to start making money online. All you have to be able to do is write interesting articles. Two popular free blogging platforms are Blogger and WordPress.

If you're just starting out and plan to make money blogging you should choose Blogger even though I think WordPress is a more powerful blogging platform.

It seems a little strange to not pick the best tool but I also believe in picking the right tool for the right job. As I'll explain, Blogger is better than WordPress if you're just starting out.
Twitter is a great way to communicate and meet new people with similar interests. If you run a business you can leverage Twitter to help promote your brand but it can all seem a bit overwhelming.

By now everyone knows what Twitter is but lately it seems like it's filling up with spammers and people are just plain doing things wrong. If you're just getting started, or if you're having trouble getting the results from Twitter it might be because you're not coming off like a genuine person.

I've had some fairly successful Twitter accounts (this one is new) and I've learned a bit by helping others and spent time examining how some businesses found success with Twitter. I'd like to share the key points I learned that can help you promote your company through Twitter including some Do's and Don'ts of business tweets.
Giving your site a new look can help boost traffic and user engagement. It's also a good time to optimize the site's HTML. The importance of on-page SEO is often overlooked in favor of link building so I wanted to look at an example where it made a big difference.

Years ago I had developed a website which was a customized CMS system for a local SMB. They're in the B2B (business to business) space meaning they don't provide products and services to a large market. Their expectations for traffic weren't very high as they have a very specific focus.

They came back to me at a later point asking for some enhancements to their site and we both agreed the site's design could use a major update. It had been a few years and web trends had significantly changed.

After more than two years I took a look at the results and we're both quite happy with them.
As I was writing my last article patting myself on the back for my little part in making the internet a better place (since Matt Cutts and Google didn't) I was seeing something very strange.

According to Alexa, a lot of the sites I checked that were negatively impacted by Panda and Penguin had very high Alexa Regional Rankings in non English speaking countries. This raises a red flag for me that there might be something fishy happening. You know, cause these sites are written in English and all.

It made me wonder if the recent Panda and Penguin (and even earlier) changes to Google's Search Ranking algorithms might only be effecting English speaking or maybe first-world countries in general. Or maybe there was something else entirely different going on?
I just saw Matt Cutts response to the Scamworld video via a post on SaltyDroid.

Matt's tweet in response didn't come as a shock. Internet Marketers and SEOs seem to go hand in hand and Matt has a strong relationship with the SEO community being he's the devine messenger sent down from the top of Mount View to help those of us looking to put things online stay in Google's good graces.
I have respect for what Matt Cutts has been doing to combat webspam at Google but I disagree with him here. While there may have been a time that SEO and IM had a more legitimate meaning (err maybe just SEO), the titles have generally been corrupted. Maybe a little history lesson will help.
When AdSense does not have advertisers to fill your ad slot it displays a blank space by default which doesn't exactly maximize your revenue potential. A better solution is to display alternate ads. In this post I'll show you how to easily set up your AdSense Backup Ads to display either Commission Junction Smart Zones or Amazon Affiliate ads.

Both Amazon and Commission Junction run large, well-respected affiliate programs that can help you earn money from space that would otherwise be left blank. The process is very simple and you only need to know some basic HTML and CSS as well as have the ability to upload files to your website.
Jeff Bezos is a founder of Amazon.com who has served as it's chairman and CEO for many years. He has a net worth of $18.4 billion mostly from the Internet.
If ever there was a man that could make a killing on the internet selling eBooks it's this guy! But he's not.
Come to think of it, why aren't Sergey Brin and Larry Page releasing "The Secrets Of Making Money Through Search Engines"!?!?!?
Is Mark Zuckerberg currently working on his "How To Build Wealth Through Social Networking Empires" seminars?
No, but some random guy you've never heard of puts up some money for a late night TV spot or a cheap webpage and you're ready to hand over your credit card number. What's the worst that can happen? You're out a few bucks right? WRONG! You can lose a whole lot more.

Google AdSense has been enabling AdSense Publishers to have more control over the ads that are displayed on there sites. Two of the ways they've done this are by allowing publishers to block ads based on General and Sensitive Categories.

Using these tools can help you increase your AdSense earnings by showing only ads you think would be relevant to your visitors. It can also hurt your earnings if you're not careful.

So which categories should you block and which should you allow?

I've been noticing a strange AdWords trend that has me really concerned about how it might affect me as an AdSense publisher. I keep seeing very deceptive ads that I'm sure generate invalid clicks through no fault of the AdSense publisher.

These ads have turned up on various sites but today I found one on this very blog as I was previewing my last article.

The ads are disguised so they don't look like ads. The example I included in the screenshot above even closely matches the colors of my site's template.

From time to time I notice a new AdSense click that has high earnings (5-10x my average EPC), then a short time later the click is still there but the revenue has vanished

In some cases it seems these ads are a willful attempt to get more impressions and more clicks but not have to pay for it. The scam appears to go like this:

Create an ad that looks nothing like an ad.

Make sure the ad can be confused with the content of the sites it's likely to be displayed on.

Bid very high for your ad placements.

Hope the ads generate a lot of invalid clicks so you get a discount.

Is anything being done about this? Are these types of ads potentially putting my AdSense account at risk of being disabled?

By default a fairly non descriptive name is given to the item but I recommend you do not use it. Instead create a more descriptive name.

I thought I'd share the naming convention I use with AdSense that I've found to be very helpful especially now that AdSense has upgraded to the new AdSense interface.
The past few days I've been working on some websites that I wrote years ago. Part of the motivation was to add new features but there were also some bugs that developed when external APIs changed or in some cases disappeared.

Some of it was painless, other parts had me banging my head up against the wall.

I thought I'd document some of the problems I ran across and some of the things that have helped make the update process easier.
Over the years more and more people have been looking for ways to make money online. Many have turned to blogging. But how much money can you expect to make from a blog?

I addressed this topic back in 2008 in How Much Money Do Bloggers Make (analysis of a poll from Darren Rowse) and it turns out to be not that much for most. Now I'd like to address the same topic by looking at the stats of 7 of the 10 last blogs in tecnorati's top 100 blog list.

They're not the top of the list but also nothing to sneeze at either. Being in the top 100 when there are hundreds of millions of blogs out there is a very big accomplishment!

So let's look at what it takes to make the least, most popular blog and what type of success it has.
Continue Reading >>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2192138211722024545.post-34007627662360022082012-05-13T09:04:00.000-04:002013-09-26T22:24:00.027-04:00What Happens When You Stop Blogging?

Many of you know what it's like. You start a blog and you have every intention of posting to it regularly. then after a while you start to lose interest in blogging.

You don't want to fill your blog up with the same old stuff everyone else is posting and slowly your posting frequency goes down to zero.

There are many of these sleeping or zombie blogs out there. I've had some. Heck, this one is one that I thought I'd be posting to more.

I also have another blog that was fairly popular but circumstances changed that prevented me from writing articles regularly for it.

Or, even worse things might have happened? Maybe you really did pass away. Well, not you personally or you wouldn't be reading this.

So what happens when you stop updating your blog?

A lot of people have been using services like StatCounter to track AdSense clicks as well as for gathering other information about their website visitors.

StatCounter is the most popular free service that offers the ability to track AdSense, Amazon and other affiliate ad clicks but I don't mean to single them out. I think it's a bad idea in general to give access to information about your site's visitors and what AdSense, Amazon or other affiliate ads your visitors click on. It is something that could potentially reduce your earnings.

Not many things in life are free and it's hard to imagine a company is giving you access to their service and not getting anything out of it. They have servers and bandwidth to pay for as well as salaries for their staff.

StatCounter claims that they make their revenue through advertisements on their website, they do not put ads on your site and you can even have their tracker hidden so it's not visible on your website. But is StatCounter getting more out of the deal?

Continue Reading >>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2192138211722024545.post-82099992733189250732010-10-08T13:01:00.002-04:002013-09-26T22:18:23.223-04:00Inline Contextual Text Popup Ads with Amazon and Blogger

Google has been making a lot of improvements to their free blogging platform, Blogger.com.
One of these recent changes has been the integration of Blogger with the Amazon Affiliate program.

Now you can easily link your blog with your Amazon Associates tracking id. One of the benefits is you can quickly and easily add affiliate links to products on Amazon.com by using the Amazon Product Finder that is located next to your post editor.

Just type search for the product you want and click to insert a text, image or advanced link+image link which includes pricing information.

This is a lot faster than logging into Amazon's affiliate site, searching for the product, choosing the appropriate tracking id, setting the options to match your site's template then copying and pasting the code. It's even better if you usually add plain image links. In the past you had to download the image and then upload it to blogger. Not anymore!

You can also use your Amazon Associates account and blogger to include contextual inline text pop up ads in your blog posts. When your guest hovers over a link a small pop-up will appear showing the details of the product. Here's how to do it.
The Amazon Associate program is one of the oldest and most popular affiliate program out there. It was the first affiliate program I joined.

I didn't have a whole lot of success with it at first and forgot about it for a while. Then I decided to try and learn more about it and find ways to improve my results.

It's also been a while since I posted on this site so I thought I'd come back and share some of what's been working for me.

This is literally going to be very hard if you want to get started.

This isn't a program where you sit and click your way to make money. Having the best technical skills or being able to program the best interactive Web 2.0 website may help but it's meaningless unless you put in a lot of physical work. I mean a lot. This might be the hardest you've ever pushed yourself.

Not everyone can do it, but I think a lot of people should try, even if you don't plan on making money from it. The rewards can be great. The affiliate program pays out 25% which is very high, and there are 10's of thousands of new customers buying every week. The top tier affiliates average over $100,000 a year.

This is not a scam but I'm going to tell you up front this isn't going to be easy. It may turn out to be the best thing you've decided to do, even if you never make a dime. If you want to learn more, continue reading below.
